Focus of the Week: Your Child’s Medical Information and Medication Requirements

We would like to remind all families of the importance of keeping your child’s medical information and medication requirements up to date with the school.

If your child has:

  • a new diagnosis
  • an existing condition that has changed (e.g. asthma, allergies, diabetes), or
  • any updates to their medication

please inform the school as soon as possible. This includes both temporary and long-term conditions that may affect your child’s wellbeing during the school day.

Why is this important?

  • It ensures our staff are prepared to provide appropriate care for your child during the school day.
  • It allows us to respond quickly and safely in the event of a medical issue or emergency.
  • It ensures the school remains compliant with health, safety, and duty-of-care obligations.

Regarding Common Medications

Please note that the school does not stock or supply general medications such as Panadol, Nurofen, or antihistamines for student use.

If your child may require medication during school hours, it is your responsibility to:

  • Provide the medication, clearly labelled with your child’s name.
  • Ensure the medication is handed directly to the school office or Health Centre, where it will be stored securely.
  • Notify the school when the medication needs to be updated, replaced, or discontinued.

Students who require medication during the day must report to the Health Centre, where staff will assist with administration according to your provided instructions. We kindly ask that students do not carry medication in their school bags, unless specifically approved for emergency use

Medication Expiry and Replacements

Please ensure that your child’s medication is in-date and replenished as needed. When medication is running low or nearing its expiry date, the Health Centre personnel will notify you via email or phone call. For your child’s safety, it is mandatory that updated medication is provided to the school promptly.

Medical Condition Clearance

If your child no longer requires medication due to changes in their health – for example, if a GP has determined that they have outgrown a condition such as asthma or allergies – the school must be provided with a clearance letter from your child’s doctor confirming that medication is no longer needed.

We thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping our students safe and healthy—their safety is our priority.

If you need to update your child’s medical information or medication details, please contact the school office or email mmalik@alsiraat.vic.edu.au.
