Focus of the Week: Where we spotlight a key topic to share helpful tips, important information, and clear processes to support parents and students.

If Your Child Is Absent From School

Regular attendance is important for your child’s learning, wellbeing, and social development. We understand that sometimes students may be absent due to illness, appointments, or family circumstances.

Whenever your child is absent, it is important that the school is notified as soon as possible.  As a school, we are legally required to keep accurate attendance records for all students.

How to Notify the School of an Absence

Please notify the school using one of the following methods:

📧 Email: info@alsiraat.vic.edu.au
📞 Phone: 9407 7000  (Voicemail can be left before 8:00am)
📱 SMS: 0480 001 055

When contacting the school, please include:

  • Your child’s full name
  • Year level and class (eg. 4D)
  • Reason for absence
  • Expected duration of absence (if known)

Late Arrivals to School

If your child arrives late to school, they must sign in:

  • Primary students: at the school office
  • Secondary students: using the iPad sign-in system

If a student is not signed in, they may be marked absent and a SMS notification will be sent to parents/carers.

Please respond via phone, SMS, or email with the reason for the late arrival so our records can be updated correctly.

Extended Leave During School Term

Extended leave during term time (one week or more) for reasons other than illness is discouraged unless there are exceptional circumstances.

If your child will be absent for one week or longer, please ensure you:

  • Complete the Extended Leave of Absence Form
  • Submit the form to the school office
  • Notify your child’s teachers via email
  • Arrange a meeting with Mr Vis before the leave begins (Secondary students only)

Please note:

  • Non-emergency leave will be recorded as Unapproved Absence
  • Extended absences may affect your child’s academic progress and social development
  • For VCE students, exceeding allowable absences may result in failing or repeating subjects
  • Absences of one full term or longer may result in termination of enrolment, with re-enrolment required upon return
