Back in 2021, Al Siraat College proudly hosted the community screening of the first part of the powerful documentary Before 1770. We are now excited to invite our community to the screening of the second part, Before 1770: The Journey Home, showing at Cinema Nova this month.
Directed by Wesam Charkawi and Fred El-Harris, the film uncovers the Yolngu people’s 60,000-year history and their long-standing connections with Muslim seafarers well before Captain Cook’s arrival. It tells a vital story of Indigenous resilience, trade, and cultural exchange that challenges colonial narratives.
As a Muslim community, it is important for us to stand in solidarity with Aboriginal people and support truth-telling. Our Muslim ancestors had a rich and long connection with Aboriginal communities on this land, hundreds of years before white settlement. This film sheds light on these often-forgotten ties.
