Nature Book Week: Exploring, Discovering and Learning Outdoors

21 October 2026

Throughout Nature Book Week, organised annually by The Wilderness Society, our Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed a special outdoor learning experience beneath the gumtrees.

Nature Book Week: Exploring, Discovering and Learning Outdoors

The sessions combined storytelling with a hands-on exploration of Australian native plants. Students were encouraged to use their senses to see, feel, touch and smell natural treasures brought in by Ms Tanja, including banksias, seed pods, gum nuts and native flowers. This sensory experience sparked curiosity and encouraged students to take a closer look at the beauty and diversity of our natural environment.

With the sounds of nature around them, students then settled down to enjoy Tree by Claire Saxby (Year 1) and Carmichael’s Journey by Shelly Fussell (Year 2). The outdoor setting provided a wonderful opportunity to bring these stories to life, encouraging our students to make connections between the books they were reading and the natural world around them.

Taking learning beyond the classroom offered students a chance to slow down, observe their surroundings and engage with nature in a meaningful way. Through stories, sensory exploration and shared discovery, the sessions encouraged a love of reading while fostering curiosity, environmental awareness and an appreciation of Allah as the Creator of the natural world.

At Al Siraat, experiences like these remind us that learning can happen everywhere. By nurturing a connection with nature from an early age, we hope to inspire the next generation to value and care for Allah’s beautiful creation as something we can all appreciate when we take the time to slow down, look around us and notice the wonders of the world He has created.
