Year 3 Step Back in Time to the 1870’s with Mrs Sargood

Students met “Mrs Sargood” and learned about life at Rippon Lea Mansion, the 12 Sargood children who lived there, and how these children were educated in a special kind of school within their own home. This gave students a fascinating insight into how wealthy Melbourne families lived and learned in the late 1800s.

She guided students through what life was like for Melbourne children in the 1870s, and the differences were striking. From strict classroom rules and long hours to slate boards instead of laptops and very few holidays, students were amazed by how tough school once was. She also shared stories about children’s responsibilities at home, including chores and work that began at a very young age.

The visit was more than just a history lesson. It was an immersive experience that captured students’ attention and imagination. They asked thoughtful questions, compared their own lives to those of children in the past, and gained a deeper appreciation for the comforts and opportunities they have today.

This engaging session helped students understand how much times have changed, and showed them that history is not just something in a book, it is something we can experience, imagine, and connect with.
