Our Year 4 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Western Treatment Plant last week, where they explored the important role water plays in our everyday lives and the environment. The visit supported their learning about the Urban Water Cycle and gave students a valuable opportunity to see large-scale water treatment and recycling processes up close.
During the day, students discovered that the Western Treatment Plant spans an area almost as large as Phillip Island and processes close to half of Melbourne’s wastewater. As they toured the site, they learned how water travels through drains, pipes, treatment ponds, and recycling systems before being safely reused.
Students were especially intrigued by the many surprising facts shared throughout the excursion, including:
• Melbourne’s very first toilet was flushed in 1857• Thousands of migratory shorebirds travel from Siberia each year to the wetlands surrounding the plant.
The excursion sparked meaningful conversations about sustainability, conservation, and the connection between healthy ecosystems and responsible water use. Students asked insightful questions, engaged enthusiastically in discussions, and gained a deeper appreciation for the hidden infrastructure that supports our growing city.
It was a fantastic day of hands-on learning and discovery. Thank you to our dedicated Year 4 staff and TAs for supporting students throughout this wonderful experience.
