The Student Representative Council (SRC), in partnership with Youth Leadership Academy Australia (YLAA), recently hosted an inspiring two-day leadership workshop for our Secondary Student Leaders. YLAA, a registered Not-For-Profit Organisation operating within The Youth Impact Foundation, is dedicated to empowering young people and fostering future leaders, and this workshop truly achieved that.

Fifty student leaders participated in this valuable program, which focused on core leadership themes including resilience, flexibility, relationships, wellbeing, and teamwork. Over two dynamic days, students worked closely in both small and large groups, engaging in learner-centred activities and reflective debriefs that encouraged open communication, emotional safety, and meaningful connection.

The program provided our leadership team with solid foundations for success, fostering trust, establishing clear communication channels, and developing a shared vision. Students were challenged to think critically about issues within their schools and communities, exploring new ways to address them through innovative, student-led initiatives. In doing so, they built essential problem-solving skills, resilience, and self-confidence in equipping them not only to lead others but to lead themselves.

The workshops were thoughtfully designed and delivered with sustainability, positive impact, and student wellbeing in mind, ensuring participants felt safe, supported, and valued as they developed both personal and leadership skills.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Community and Cohesion Support Programme (CCSP) for their generous support, which made this invaluable workshop possible.

The Student Representative Council (SRC), in partnership with Speaking Schools Australasia, hosted an engaging series of Public Speaking Workshop for Year 10 Community Services students and Year 9-12 Student Leaders over two separate days. This exciting event provided students with the opportunity to strengthen their public speaking skills while cultivating essential qualities like confidence, resilience, and empathy. These traits are critical for success in both leadership and life.

Throughout the interactive workshop, participants immersed themselves in a range of activities designed to boost their speaking ability, critical thinking, and teamwork. These sessions not only helped improve communication techniques but also focused on developing a deeper understanding of empathy and resilience.

Over the course of a five-session series, we proudly trained 125 student leaders in our Secondary School. This workshop went beyond simply practising public speaking – it offered students the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence in self-expression, and develop essential leadership skills. Through carefully designed sessions focused on communication and presentation, and by working in small, collaborative groups, participants refined their abilities in a supportive environment. These experiences have equipped them to take on meaningful leadership roles both within the school and in the broader community.

This workshop taught me how to appear more confident when speaking in front of a group of people, as well as different techniques to use to appear more engaging. I really enjoyed this experience and gained many new useful skills that would definitely be beneficial for when I do public speaking in the future.” Namrah, Year 12

I also learn how to make a speech more interesting. My highlight was working together with my group and doing the icebreaker.” Fatimah, Year 9

“The workshop really helped me understand how public speaking isn’t just about getting up on a stage and reading off a script, there’s a lot more that goes into it. Body language, expressions, and even the content itself is important when you present a speech! I’m grateful for this workshop and hope to be able to implement the skills I’ve learned.” Mohaned, Year 9

“I feel like this public speaking workshop helped me improve my confidence in public speaking and I really enjoyed it.” Safwan, Year 8

Muneeb, Year 8

“I really enjoyed the workshop. I feel like I really improved my speaking skills. It was engaging because we had to brainstorm our ideas and present them to everyone. I think that now I’m much better at bringing emotions to my speech”. Rushda, Year 8

“As a student struggling with public speaking, the Public Speaking Workshop helped me project my voice and ideas more clearly. The techniques I learnt from this workshop have enabled me to speak more confidently and more adequately. The coaches have made the experience more fun and enjoyable for us, thank you so much for organising this event!!”  Ramira, Year 9

“I found the workshop today to be extremely beneficial. The instructors were extremely nice and understanding, and I feel my fear of public speaking has decreased. I loved how they let us practice with microphones and stages, instead of us only being able to use those facilities on the actual day. I also enjoyed how everyone got a few turns at speaking and the activities to write were really beneficial for our speaking. Thank you, Ms Noori,”. Amaya, Year 8

On 6th May 2025, a group of our enthusiastic chess players proudly represented Al Siraat College at the Interschool Islamic Chess Competition, hosted at Ilim College’s Kiewa Campus for Boys Secondary.

This marked our first time participating in the event, providing a fantastic opportunity for our Secondary boys to test their skills and enjoy a friendly yet competitive environment among other schools.

The tournament followed a Swiss system structure — a non-eliminating format where players are paired each round based on their performance throughout the day. Students competed in 6 rounds, with each match played under a 10-minute timer and a 1-second increment.

A special congratulations to Solayman Rayan, our top-performing student, who earned a medal for his outstanding efforts on the day.

We had a total of 8 Secondary boys proudly representing Al Siraat College, and we commend each of them for their dedication, enthusiasm, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the event.

A heartfelt thank you to Mr Bayram Arifoski for accompanying and supporting our students on this excursion.

We look forward to taking part in more chess competitions in the future and continuing to nurture our students’ strategic thinking, focus, and competitive spirit!

Our VET students from Unit 1–4 Community Services and Sport, Aquatics & Recreation participated in a valuable First Aid and CPR training course held onsite at the College.

Led by Ms Mubasshirah, our qualified first aid trainer, and supported by classroom teachers Ms Noori and Ms Dilara, the students gained essential lifesaving skills while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. The course provided both practical and theoretical knowledge, equipping students with the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations — skills that will prove useful not only in their future careers but also in everyday life.

Jed from La Trobe University recently delivered a presentation on the ASPIRE Program to our senior school students.

This program enables Year 12 students to access La Trobe University courses based on factors such as community involvement and leadership in addition to their ATAR and study scores.

As our students are provided with numerous community involvement and leadership opportunities, their chances of successfully being accepted into the ASPIRE Program are enhanced.

Jed thanked our students for their attentiveness and intelligent questions.
