Our Year 7 students participated in a memorable Indigenous Incursion, providing them with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and traditions.

Throughout the day, students were immersed in rich cultural experiences, listening to the powerful sounds of the yidaki (often still referred to as the “didgeridoo”) and learning about its cultural significance. They discovered that the instrument is traditionally known as the yidaki in Indigenous communities, with the term “didgeridoo” being a name given later by the white colonisers. They gained insight into the importance of using culturally appropriate names and recognising the diversity of Aboriginal languages and traditions.

Students also explored a fascinating collection of traditional Aboriginal artefacts, including shields, hunting boomerangs, woven baskets and other significant cultural objects. They learned about the purpose and importance of these artefacts and gained valuable insight into the knowledge, skills and traditions passed down through generations.

One of the highlights of the incursion was storytime with the visiting Elders, who shared traditional stories celebrating the deep connection between people, Country and culture. Inspired by these stories, students created their own artworks using traditional Aboriginal symbols to communicate personal stories and ideas through visual storytelling.

The incursion was an engaging and meaningful learning experience that encouraged respect, curiosity and creativity, while helping students develop a greater appreciation of Australia’s rich First Nations cultures and artistic traditions.

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is returning to our LEAP Inquiry classes in 2026 with an exciting change of location: This year’s Northern Metropolitan Regional Tournament Day will be held at its new home, Deakin University’s Burwood Campus, on Saturday, 15 August.

During Term 3, all Year 7 and 8 LEAP Inquiry students will work in teams to develop an original response to an open-ended Long-Term challenge from The Arts, STEM, Language Literature or Social Sciences. Through this process, students will strengthen their creative thinking, problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills.

Up to four teams will be selected to represent Al Siraat College at the Regional Tournament. They will present their prepared solutions and complete an unseen Spontaneous Challenge, requiring quick thinking and strong collaboration.

Following Al Siraat College’s second-place achievement in the Social Sciences category at Regional Tournament Day in 2025, we look forward to another year of creativity, determination and teamwork as our students take on TOM in 2026 at its new home.

A child’s spiritual, emotional, mental and academic wellbeing begins at home, and a healthy home begins with the relationship between the parents. Children learn from how their parents communicate, manage stress, resolve disagreements and show kindness to one another.

This practical seminar will explore:

  • Building sakeenah, mercy and affection within marriage
  • Managing disagreements in a healthy and respectful way
  • Understanding what children learn from their parents’ marriage
  • Developing a united approach to parenting
  • Creating a faith-centred home in which the entire family can flourish

The seminar is open to all community members. Parents and married couples are especially encouraged to attend, and couples are encouraged to attend together.
