Al Siraat proudly congratulates Year 12 student Halimah Sheikh, who was awarded Runner-Up at the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) Semi-Final.

Competing against outstanding speakers from leading government and independent schools across Victoria, Halimah delivered an engaging prepared speech “Why Facts Don’t Change Minds”, followed by a compelling impromptu speech on the topic “Where Do We Go From Here?”

Her confidence, eloquence and composure were particularly impressive in what adjudicators described as one of the strongest semi-final groups they had judged.

Halimah was supported by fellow VCE students Hashim Khan, Ahmed Ismail and Fatimah Muhammad, who represented the College with maturity and exemplary conduct.

To recognise her outstanding achievement, Halimah was presented with a VCAA PESA Runner-Up pin by Mr Vis during the morning assembly last week.

Congratulations, Halimah, on this remarkable achievement and for representing Al Siraat College with distinction.

We are proud to have launched our journey towards Al Siraat’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), affirming our commitment to building meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and reconciliation throughout our College community.

Our newly established RAP Committee held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday 16th June 2026, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the College. The committee is led by College Co-Founder Ms Rahat as President, and is co-chaired by Ms Tanja and Ms Hadeer. We are also delighted to have our Indigenous Outreach students actively participating in the committee, ensuring student voice and leadership are central to our reconciliation journey.

As part of this commitment, members of the RAP Committee visited the City of Whittlesea Aboriginal Gathering Place in Mernda on Tuesday, 28 July. Two of our Year 7 Indigenous Outreach students, Rayyan and Mahmoud, joined staff on this valuable learning experience.

During the visit, our group explored the many spaces within the purpose-built Aboriginal Gathering Place, which was officially opened in February this year. The visit provided an opportunity to learn about the significance of the facility as a welcoming space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to connect, celebrate culture, share knowledge, and strengthen community relationships. It also allowed our committee members to deepen their understanding of local First Nations history, culture, and the importance of creating genuine partnerships with Indigenous communities.

A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) provides a practical framework for organisations to contribute to reconciliation by taking meaningful actions that promote respect, relationships, and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through our RAP journey, Al Siraat aims to continue embedding reconciliation into everyday school life, creating opportunities for learning, reflection, and collaboration across our community.

We look forward to sharing this journey with our students, families, and wider community as we continue to learn together, strengthen relationships, and contribute positively towards reconciliation. We are excited about the initiatives and opportunities that lie ahead and thank all members of our RAP Committee for their dedication and commitment to this important work.

On Thursday, 23 July 2026, Al Siraat College’s Year 10 and 11 VET Community Services students visited Aeralife Northpoint in Epping for a meaningful community-based learning experience.

As part of the visit, our students joined residents in a Commonwealth Games-themed program organised by the Aeralife Northpoint team. Students and residents participated in a range of games together, creating opportunities for friendly interaction, teamwork and conversation. The activities brought energy and enjoyment to the day while helping students form genuine connections with the residents.

The experience allowed students to apply important community services skills outside the classroom, including respectful communication, active listening, patience and empathy. Through these interactions, students gained a better understanding of how recreational activities can support residents’ social connections, participation and overall wellbeing.

Students also created cards and wrote thoughtful thank-you letters for the residents. These personal messages expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to spend time together and added a special touch to the day.

The visit encouraged students to reflect on the important role of aged care and community services workers in helping individuals feel included, respected and valued. It also demonstrated how shared activities can bring different generations together and create positive experiences for everyone involved.

Al Siraat sincerely thanks the residents and staff of Aeralife Northpoint for their warm welcome and for organising an engaging Commonwealth Games-themed program. The College looks forward to continuing this valuable partnership and providing students with further opportunities to learn through service, compassion and community connection.

Our Year 7 LEAP Inquiry students recently participated in the Melbourne Multicultural Walk as part of their Inquiry unit on Intercultural Understanding.

Students explored the city while learning about the diverse cultures, communities and histories that have shaped Melbourne. 

The experience strengthened students’ understanding of cultural identity, diverse perspectives and the important contributions different communities have made to Australian society. Our tour guides shared many interesting stories and pointed out unique landmarks throughout the city.

It was a cool and sunny winter’s day, and students stayed warm as they walked through the city and took in the excitement of a busy weekday. 

Many students commented that they felt inspired to return with their families and friends to share some of the fascinating places they had discovered.

Our Secondary students proudly demonstrated the spirit of service and responsible citizenship by volunteering at the Pakistani Mango and Multicultural Food Festival 2026, held at Sandown Racecourse.

Thirty students participated through the College’s Values-In-Action (VIA) Program, supporting an event that welcomed more than 30,000 community members. Their involvement provided a valuable opportunity to develop teamwork, communication, organisation, problem-solving and customer service skills in a busy public environment.

Organised by the High Commission of Pakistan, Australia and the Consulate General of Pakistan, Melbourne, with support from local community organisations, the festival celebrated cultural diversity through multicultural food stalls, cultural displays, entertainment and activities representing communities from around the world.

Students had the opportunity to engage respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds while gaining insight into the planning and coordination required to deliver a large-scale community event.

Their participation reflected the College values of Respectful Relationships, Real Life Learning, Responsible Citizenship and It Starts with Me. Through volunteering, students strengthened their confidence, developed social responsibility and experienced the positive impact of giving back to the wider community.

We commend our 30 student volunteers for their dedication, positive attitude and willingness to serve. Their contribution demonstrated the important role young people can play in strengthening community connections and supporting events that celebrate culture, friendship and inclusion.
