This week, our college celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (4 August) with a range of meaningful learning activities focused on culture, connection, and the power of storytelling.
This year’s theme, “Living Our Truth,” highlights the importance of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, identities, and the sharing of knowledge across generations.
To begin our celebrations, both Primary and Secondary student leaders prepared and delivered a special Acknowledgement of Country during Tuesday’s assemblies. The acknowledgements reflected the theme of Living Our Truth and provided an opportunity for our students and staff to recognise the Traditional Custodians of the land, their enduring connection to Country, and the importance of respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. As a Muslim community, it also reminded us of our responsibility to seek knowledge with humility, show respect for the people and histories of the land on which we live and learn, and continue building understanding through listening and learning.
For our Foundation to Year 2 students, Ms Tanja, Ms Gulhan, and Ms Hanan led interactive storytelling activities designed to introduce students to Aboriginal perspectives in an age-appropriate and engaging way.
During each session, students listened to Aboriginal stories and discussed important concepts including Acknowledgement of Country, the role of Traditional Custodians of the land, and the deep connection Aboriginal peoples have with Country, culture, and community. Students also explored the importance of caring for country, our native Australian animals, land and waterways.
Students in Years 3 to 6 participated in the “Story Keepers” activity, facilitated by Ms Hadeer. These sessions explored the significance of oral storytelling—how stories, knowledge, traditions, and cultural teachings have been passed down through generations by being shared from one person to another.
Students learned that storytelling is more than just sharing a story; it is a powerful way of preserving history, strengthening identity, and connecting communities across generations. They also reflected on the Islamic concept of amanah (trust), recognising that listening respectfully to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and perspectives, caring for knowledge, and sharing what they learn with honesty and respect are important responsibilities in both their faith and their learning.
The week provided our students with valuable opportunities to listen, learn, ask questions, and celebrate the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Reflecting this spirit of compassion and care, you are also invited to support our annual fundraiser for childhood cancer research, helping bring hope to children facing cancer.

Our Tournament of Minds teams in Year 7 and 8 LEAP Inquiry have been working incredibly hard to prepare for the upcoming TOM Regional Tournament Day on August 15th at Deakin University, Burwood.
Through many trials and challenges, students have demonstrated creativity, perseverance, teamwork and impressive problem-solving skills. We are very proud of their commitment and the way they have continued to refine their ideas and presentations.
A big Thank You to our families for their ongoing support, encouragement and assistance of their children throughout the TOM Challenge period. We also sincerely thank the teachers and staff who have generously given their time to organise the tournament, facilitate workshops and support our students. Our Foundation students enjoyed an exciting excursion to SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium as part of their Islamic Studies inquiry into “Allah (SWT) is the Creator.” The visit provided a memorable opportunity for students to observe the incredible diversity of marine life while strengthening their understanding of Allah’s (SWT) magnificent creation.
As they journeyed through the aquarium, students were captivated by fascinating sea creatures including graceful rays, colourful tropical fish, majestic sharks, playful penguins and many other marine animals. Each exhibit sparked curiosity, wonder and thoughtful discussions about the unique characteristics of the animals and the environments in which they live.
The excursion encouraged our young students to appreciate the beauty, balance and diversity of the natural world while reflecting on our responsibility as Muslims to care for Allah’s (SWT) creation. It also provided valuable opportunities for observation, questioning and meaningful connections between classroom learning and real life experiences.
It was a joyful day of discovery, with many smiling faces and unforgettable moments as our youngest learners explored one of Melbourne’s most loved educational attractions together.

These evenings are a beautiful opportunity for sisters to come together in remembrance, reflection, and connection. Her Halaqa continues to be a special space to reconnect, recharge, and support one another in a warm and welcoming environment.

The Centre for Muslim Wellbeing is offering a nationally recognised Mental Health First Aid course at Al Siraat College, delivered by a qualified Muslim instructor.
Mental health challenges can affect anyone. This practical two-day certified course equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of common mental health problems, start supportive conversations, respond to mental health crises, and guide people towards appropriate professional support.
Participants who successfully complete both sessions will receive an Accredited Mental Health First Aider Certificate, valid for three years.
