On Friday 8th May, Al Siraat was proudly represented at a Parliamentary hearing in Victoria examining the proposed waste-to-energy infrastructure and its potential impact on local communities.

ASC Students Advocate at Parliamentary Hearing

Five members of our school community – Primary students Jana G. Nisa Y., Rayaan S. and Secondary students Aicha H. and Tamara M.  - alongside Ms Asma, delivered a powerful and thoughtful submission over the course of one hour. Speaking with confidence and conviction, our students articulated the concerns held by many young people and families within our community regarding the proposed Wollert Incinerator.

Drawing on both research and personal reflection, the students addressed critical issues including environmental responsibility, long-term public health implications, community wellbeing, intergenerational justice, and the importance of transparent and fair decision-making processes. Most importantly, they highlighted the need for young people to be genuinely included in conversations and policies that will directly shape the future they inherit.

Each speaker brought a unique perspective, demonstrating strong preparation, maturity, and a genuine commitment to advocating for their community and environment.

Ms Asma and the ASC Incinerator Action Group team played an instrumental role in supporting and guiding the students throughout the process, helping them prepare thoroughly and ensuring their voices were heard respectfully, professionally and with impact.

This was a meaningful example of student engagement in real-world issues. It shows how young people can take part in important conversations and advocate for positive change.

We are incredibly proud of our students for representing Al Siraat with integrity, courage, intelligence and maturity. Their willingness to speak up on matters affecting both current and future generations is a testament to the values of leadership, service and social responsibility that we strive to nurture within our College community.
