On 13 August 2025, our Year 11 Business Management and Year 12 VCE Food Studies students enjoyed a cross-disciplinary excursion to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. The visit brought classroom theory to life, enhancing engagement and deepening understanding of key VCE learning outcomes.

For Year 11 Business Management, the excursion linked directly to Unit 2’s focus on Operations Management and Marketing. Students observed how a successful business manages production, quality control, and marketing in a competitive industry. They explored the challenges of recruitment in a regional setting and learned how targeted hiring strategies help address these. The team also demonstrated how data is used to forecast demand accurately, balancing supply to meet customer needs while avoiding waste.

For Year 12 VCE Food Studies, the visit supported Unit 4, Outcome 2 on sustainability and ethical food systems. Students saw first-hand the Chocolaterie’s commitment to sustainable sourcing, ethical production, and environmentally responsible practices. Highlights included their use of solar farms for power, rainwater and underground tanks for water supply, and local ingredient sourcing to reduce food miles and carbon footprint. During the Q&A session, students learned that many ingredients are supplied by local farmers.

A memorable part of the day was the hands-on chocolate-making activity, where students sampled a variety of chocolates before creating their own designs.

💬 Student reflection – Layanne Abou Lebdeh (Year 12):
“It was inspiring to see a business that cares about the environment while still delivering high-quality products. The visit brought our classroom learning to life, making the theory much easier to understand in a real-world setting.”

The excursion was both educational and enjoyable, leaving students inspired and better equipped to connect theory with practice.

Last week, our Student Support Department (SSD) partnered with Shooters Shoot, a youth-led, Islamic faith-based mental health and basketball organisation, to deliver a unique Wellbeing and Resilience Program for our Year 6 students.

The incursion combined faith, physical activity, and emotional learning through two engaging sessions:

Journaling & Emotional Resilience Workshop
An interactive session exploring emotional intelligence, resilience, self-expression, and managing challenging emotions, guided by faith-informed journaling practices.

Basketball & Emotional Regulation Session
A structured basketball workshop focused on teamwork, emotional control, respect, conflict resolution, and positive participation.

Each student received a specialised journal from Shooters Shoot and learned how to use it as a daily tool for mental wellbeing and self-reflection.

This initiative was developed in direct response to the needs identified within the Year 6 cohort, including challenges around emotional resilience, conflict management, appropriate expression of emotions, peer respect, and healthy coping strategies. The program reinforced the meaningful connection between Islamic teachings, physical health, and mental wellbeing.

On last Sunday, 10 August 2025, the Queen Victoria Market car park became a hub of kindness, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Secondary Student Representative Council (SRC). These compassionate students set out to make a difference by feeding the homeless and brightening their day.

Led by our Year 12 boys and College Vice-Captain, the team organised a live cooking session, preparing tasty BBQ kebab burgers with onions and tomatoes, and serving refreshing drinks. The joy on the faces of the homeless as they enjoyed these warm meals was truly heart-warming.

Alhamdulillah, over 100 people were served, ensuring no one went without food. The smiles and gratitude shared were a testament to the power of compassion, generosity, and community spirit.

At Al Siraat, we live our values in action. This event reflected our value of “Real Life Learning”, encouraging students to engage in meaningful, real-world activities that foster growth and empathy.

Our mission is to inspire kindness and empathy in our students, nurturing them to become leaders who spread goodness and make a positive impact. This event was a powerful reminder of the difference small acts of kindness can make.

Student reflections:

“On Sunday, August 10th, seven of us boys from Year 12 came together to prepare and distribute burger patties to the homeless. All the food was given away, ensuring everyone we served received a warm meal. Alhamdulillah, it was a humbling experience that reminded us of all the blessings Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has bestowed upon us.” Farhan Abid, Year 12

“I found it to be a wonderful event, Alhamdulillah. Upon seeing so many people devoid of a basic necessity – shelter – we were reminded of the innumerable blessings Allah has bestowed upon us, which we often overlook. It reminded me of the statement of Allah (in meaning): ‘It is He (Allah) Who has created for you the sense of hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and understanding (hearts). Yet, little thanks do you give.’– Safwan Moosani, Year 12
