The idea for the Janazah (Kafan) Workshop began during a Level 3 female Riyad us-Saliheen class with Ust. Hafsa Hanif. While studying a hadith on Janazah, students discussed whether they had ever witnessed or learnt the practical process of preparing a deceased person for burial.
One of the female Ilm teachers shared her own experience of assisting with the Kafan process, sparking great interest among the students, who were eager to learn this important communal obligation (Fard Kifayah).
The discussion was inspired by the words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
"Put on white clothes because they are the best, and use them for shrouding your dead."
(Riyad as Salihin, Hadith 778)
Following the lesson, Ust. Hafsa proposed a practical workshop to Sheikh Waseem and the Ilm teachers. With their full support, the workshop was organised as the final activity of Term 2.
Alhamdulillah, on Wednesday, 1 July, Sheikh Rizwan from Meadow Heights Mosque conducted the practical Janazah workshop for the male students, while the female Ilm teachers facilitated the workshop for the female students.
To conclude the day, the female students prepared salads for lunch, while the male students participated in an Arabic calligraphy (Khat) workshop. The entire Ilm Department then came together to enjoy lunch, generously prepared by the school canteen, providing a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the day’s learning and conclude the term together.
The Ilm Department sincerely thanks Sheikh Rizwan, Sheikh Waseem, the Ilm teachers, the school canteen, and everyone who contributed to the success of this meaningful program.
