IWD at Parliament of Victoria

14 March 2023

Five or our Year 12 Senior girls had the opportunity to visit the Parliament of Victoria on the special occasion of International Women’s Day.

This year's IWD was “Embrace Equity”. The aim of the theme is to start a conversation about why equal opportunities aren’t enough for women. Embracing equity involves working towards gender equality in all areas of life, including education, employment, and healthcare. It means advocating for policies that promote women’s rights, empowering women to achieve their full potential, and celebrating the achievements of women from diverse backgrounds.

The lunch event at Parliament was organised by The Honourable Lily D’Ambrosio (Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources and Minister for the State Electricity Commission) along with Kris Pavlidis (former Mayor of The City of Whittlesea).

The Minister and Ms Pavlidis spoke to our Senior girls about the theme and addressed any questions they had in regards to IWD. The girls also had wonderful networking opportunities with other schools in attendance on the day, including Epping Secondary College, Marymede Catholic College, Mill Park Secondary College, and The Lakes South Morang College. Our students had the opportunity to tour the Parliament and watch a live Parliament legislative assembly.

We would like to thank the Hon. Minister Lily D’Ambrosio MP and Kris Pavlidis for inviting us to attend this special IWD event at the Parliament.

ASC staff members also attended the "Women of Whittlesea" IWD function and panel discussion with female Muslim author Ozge Sevendik Alkan and community leader Bobby Lama, hosted by Kim Stadtmiller.
